Shoot the tallest version and crop down. 9:16 crops cleanly to 4:5 and to 1:1; none of them crop upwards without either letterboxing or losing the top and bottom of the frame. Framing for the widest format you post and then cropping is the thing that costs you a reshoot.

Safe areas are the bit people skip. Every full-screen format puts its own interface over your video — a caption block along the bottom, a rail of buttons down the right. Text placed there is legible in your editor and covered on the phone. The margins listed are working room, not a specification: they move between app versions and differ on a notched phone.

Reels get cropped twice. Full screen in the feed, 4:5 in the grid on your profile. Anything essential has to survive both, which in practice means keeping it well inside the middle.

1080px wide is enough. Uploading a 4000px image doesn't give you a sharper post — every platform re-encodes to its own size, and starting far above it sometimes makes the compression worse rather than better.
